Rebuilding confidence after job loss and staying motivated during job search

How to Overcome the Blocker of Losing a Job, Identity, and Direction

So you lost your job? Layoff, downsizing, end of contract. The why means little because each reason translates into the same losses: financial, identity, direction.

You spent time building and nurturing products, teams, processes like a living extension of yourself. You worked with your teams to deliver effective results that were pivotal to the growth of your company.

And then, just like that, your contributions are cancelled. Or so it feels. You stop joining meetings, making recommendations, rolling up your sleeves with the team. You no longer analyze, lead, envision, build. The work that shaped your days and your identity previous to “the event” are suddenly gone.

Only memories now. And lines on your resume.

Hopefully you can leave it all and feel confident in what you accomplished. But you probably can’t ignore the void that is now there. Not just the financial void if that applies (yet) but the loss of identity that comes from stepping away from a swath in time that helped shape who you have become now.

This is a blocker. The ultimate blocker.

  • Loss of sustenance.
  • Loss of identity.
  • Loss of direction.

Staying unblocked is not an option.

In today’s saturated job market – crowded with job seekers, job search scams, confusing and inconsistent modern hiring practices, and misinformation – getting unblocked feels overwhelming.

The path forward requires consistent, daily action.

Beginning in September, I will no longer be working in the environment I’ve called “my job” since 2023. For three years, I built and nurtured teams, products, and processes from the ground up. I created systems that were effective and transparent enough that the company can now take everything in-house without my continued support. Every artifact they need to pivot and grow with the processes that I helped build is complete, organized, and ready for them to use. Success!

I can leave confident in what I accomplished and proudly add the bullet points to my resume but I can’t ignore the void that is there now.

As I move through this transition on the journey that I began months ago in anticipation of this moment, I will share my experiences and thoughts in real time, now that my “event” is real. I hope through this to be able to help others through their job loss and transition.

Here are a few of the topics that my journey has already touched on. You or someone you know can start on any of these today.
